Alternative business models for parent support of schools

As a part of good governance, it is appropriate that we occasionally review the way we operate and manage our affairs.

The business model for local school P&C Associations has changed little over the decades and it therefore seems timely to undertake a review of the current model.

We surveyed our members to see what they think - see the results here.

Without limiting the choice of alternative business models and recognising that there could be other models not yet identified, the following may be considered in place of the current conventional P&C business model:

  1. The current model - P&C as an Incorporated Association. (There is more information and further considerations in our analysis of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats associated with this model).
  2. No parent association or committee but informal forums/parent gatherings hosted by the school with fundraising also by the school. (See SWOT analysis.)
  3. P&C Council as the legally constituted parent body with some school P&Cs being subcommittees of the Council. (See SWOT analysis.)
  4. Amalgamation of P&Cs in local areas into an area or regional committee covering a number of like or networked schools. (See SWOT analysis.)
  5. P&C association divested of all business activities eg canteen, uniform shop, before/after school care programs etc. (See SWOT analysis.)
  6. A formalised parent advisory or reference group to the school board. (See SWOT analysis.)
